A registered psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioners Registration Association, Virginia Woods has a wide range of experience in counselling over 30 years. Her working career began in the field of rehabilitation counselling chiefly with occupational rehabilitation of injured workers. Other areas of counselling experience are in health counselling,
employee assistance programs, child mental health, refugee trauma and torture
recovery, and most recently in mental health in a private hospital setting and
in private practice.
Virginia has developed expertise in body image and somatic psychotherapy through on-going training in dance/movement therapy and mindfulness strategies. Over the last 11 years Virginia has developed a speciality in counselling for eating disorders. She has been a member of the Eating Disorders Network in Brisbane and kept up to date with the latest treatments for people with eating issues.
In 2001 Virginia assisted with a clinical psychology masters study that investigated the effectiveness of CBT programs in conjunction with dance/movement therapy for women with body image distortion. The study indicated that dance/movement experiences combined with the CBT enhanced the effectiveness of change in body image. Virginia has also written a journal article for the Dance Therapy Association of Australia on her work with inpatients with eating disorders at a private mental health facility.
Virginia brings principles and experience of a life long practice of meditation and mindfulness practice to her work. She has a commitment to supporting people to develop a sense of wellbeing in mind, spirit and body, based on the latest understanding from neurobiology,and drawing from experience in meditation and
