Process Oriented Psychology (POP) is an approach developed in 1969 by Dr Arnold Mindell, a Jungian psychoanalyst. POP is an approach that extends beyond individual therapy and offers a framework for change in groups and on a collective scale. Its roots are based on the theoretical and experiential concepts of Jungian psychology, Gestalt, NLP, psychodrama, Taoism, modern physics and more. This approach offers a new and innovative way of working with human condition, be it on an individual or group level.
When utilising POP framework with a therapist, a client can expect an attitude of curiosity, collaborative discovery of client's process and an underpinning notion that there is coherence and value in our everyday disturbances, body symptoms and night-time dreams. This approach is non-prescriptive and the client is supported to explore and unfold their emotional and physical symptoms in order to uncover what drives those in the first place.
Luciana has been a student of POP for the past 6 years and has incorporated this approach into her practice with private/ life coaching clients. What is refreshing about using POP as an approach is that it is client-centred, validating and it coaches the client to both explore and trust their own life process rather than placing the therapist into a prescriptive, authoritative role. POP sessions are about collaboration, curiosity, developing awareness and drawing personalised meaning (and sometimes, strategies) out of their own cognitive and sensory experiences. Also, POP is theoretically rich and deep yet profoundly simple and often beautifully practical.
