You would not believe how often I hear people downplaying their depression, anxiety, grief and other mental health concerns.....I’m as guilty of this as another person. We make massive judgements about ourselves and others about mental health stuff....”Oh she is just lazy”, “He needs to get over it” and ‘Toughen up” are
common phrases we use to invalidate feelings. Why? What are we so afraid of??? From my observations, FEELINGS run our lives! Every day! We go to concerts, drink, play sports, go to work, dream of lottery win and leave relationships – all because of the feelings we think we can GET or AVOID by doing so!!!!
So, what is the big issue with admitting to having post-natal depression, grieving after passing of a loved one a year later or feeling anxious about crowds?
What would it be like if we did the same with physical health issues we have? At what point did the physical ‘become’ more important and why?
Be real. Extend compassion to yourself and others when experiencing painful emotions. They are a part of human experience. No need for lectures - just extend compassion & understanding.
